2011/04 - Present:

X-Ray Safety Consultant (Self-employed Contractor).

Provider of X-Ray Safety Inspections & Consulting Services, e.g.:

  1. Health & safety inspections of medical, dental, industrial and non medical x-ray facilities & equipment as per Canada Labour Code - Part II;
  2. RED Act regulatory x-ray equipment compliance inspections as per the RED Act Regulations;
  3. Structural X-ray shielding calculations & facility shielding design evaluations;
  4. Diagnostic X-ray imaging QA & QC program evaluations; and
  5. Equipment acceptance testing of x-ray generating equipment.

2002/01 - 2011/03:

Senior Regulatory Officer & Head, X-ray Inspections Unit (SGSRE5);

Health Canada – Consumer & Clinical Radiation Protection Bureau – Ottawa.

  • Plan, manage, direct HC’s national x-ray inspection program (TBS, CLC-II & RED Act compliance).
  • Establish inspection guidelines, train inspectors, assign inspection tasks and/or lead inspection teams.
  • Establish inspection priorities and working standards, monitor work & guide and advise inspectors.
  • Negotiate, recommend inspection/cost agreements with Federal, Provincial & Territorial gov. clients.
  • Develop Inspection Unit annual budget and prepare inspection cost/recovery estimates for clients.
  • Determine or supervise design of radiation shielding requirements for medical/dental x-ray facilities.
  • Responsible for maintaining registry of federally owned/operated x-ray equipment as required by CLC-II.

1983/09 – 2001/12:

Senior Radiation Safety Inspector, X-Ray Inspections Unit (TI6);

Health Canada – Radiation Protection Bureau - Ottawa.

  • Inspect x-ray facilities and equipment for Federal, Provincial & Territorial government clients & report.
  • Develop, audit, implement x-ray quality assurance programs.
  • Co-developed an X-ray QC Test Tool for use by medical x-ray operators located at remote facilities.
  • Develop, teach, implement QA training courses for x-ray technologists & x-ray operators.
  • Conduct Acceptance tests of new x-ray equipment for clients.
  • Determine radiation shielding requirements for hospital and nursing station x-ray facilities for clients.

1977/01 – 1983/08:

Research Technologist, Automations Engineering Unit (EGESS6);

Health Canada – Radiation Protection Bureau – National Dosimetry Services - Ottawa.

  • Research & development of thermoluminescent dosimeters and dosimetry techniques for use by NDS.
  • Calibrate radiation sources and measuring equipment used as reference standard by NDS.
  • Participate in International Dosimetry Inter-comparison measurement studies.
  • Evaluate new automated dosimetry methods, measurement techniques (PTTL) and equipment.

1973/08 – 1976/12:

Research Technologist, Nuclear Effects Division (EG-ESS-5);

National Defence Canada - Defence Research Establishment Ottawa - NES - Ottawa.

  • Assist in design/development of radiation detectors & instruments for DND combat troupes.
  • Conduct tests to determine remaining service life of existing radiation measuring equipment.
  • Assist in calibration of radiation sources and equipment used as reference standard by DND.
